Smart Growth 101: Introduction to Smart Growth
Smart Growth America
A “Smart Growth 101” presentation designed for people and organizations interested in communicating the smart growth message to audiences that are unfamiliar with the concept.

EPA Smart Growth Presentation
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
An introductory smart growth presentation created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The principles of smart growth help us better manage the pace and pattern of our communities growth. We can have the benefits of growth, more jobs, a broader tax base, and a healthy economy with fewer of the costs associated with poorly-planned development.

But after decades of sprawling development, the task of reshaping our communities can be overwhelming. Many of our children have never lived in communities where it is possible to bike down the street for a popsicle. Our current zoning codes, transportation policies, and regulations have created places in which walking to school is difficult, and sometimes even dangerous.

This starter kit, funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, pulls together some of the best smart growth resources available, including publications, presentations, fact sheets and web sites. I wish you all the best as you strive to improve the quality of life in your community.

Sincerely,

Don Chen
Executive Director

Smart Growth, the Western Answer to Sprawl

Smart Growth.org
A SERVICE OF THE SMART GROWTH NETWORK
http://www.smartgrowth.org/about/default.asp?res=1024

In communities across the nation, there is a growing concern that current development patterns -- dominated by what some call "sprawl" -- are no longer in the long-term interest of our cities, existing suburbs, small towns, rural communities, or wilderness areas. Though supportive of growth, communities are questioning the economic costs of abandoning infrastructure in the city, only to rebuild it further out.

Spurring the smart growth movement are demographic shifts, a strong environmental ethic, increased fiscal concerns, and more nuanced views of growth. The result is both a new demand and a new opportunity for smart growth.

The features that distinguish smart growth in a community vary from place to place. In general, smart growth invests time, attention, and resources in restoring community and vitality to center cities and older suburbs. New smart growth is more town-centered, is transit and pedestrian oriented, and has a greater mix of housing, commercial and retail uses. It also preserves open space and many other environmental amenities.

The Smart Growth Principles and Issues below describe in greater details the various aspects of planning and development that make up smart growth.

Better World for Humanity (bet for human)...

BETTER WORLD FOR HUMANITY
ADDRESS: Block 4, Lot 5, Phase 12 A&W subdivision Putik, Zamboanga City Philippines
Mobile NO. 0919-9526931

JUSTIFICATION AND BACKGROUND:

“BET 4 HUMAN” is a non-religious, non-political, non-profit organization has been in existence five or so years ago, and it was borne out of the need to come up with a very apt and timely intervention to the predicament of the many underserved populace in the society who for so long is inflicted with the numerous evils of society.

Socio-Economic, Cultural and Environment inadequacies are apparent in all aspects of the people’s lives; its effects are seen in the semblance of massive poverty, unequal opportunities and the like. It was seen that despite the fact that there are many proposed and even implemented programs and projects pursued by the government and the many institutions in existence, the fact still remains that there are still many things to be done. For, there are still felt needs as pockets of gaps in the implementation of these various and varied initiatives, and is apparently felt by the common people in their respective localities. It ranges from unequal distribution of assistance brought about by the system of whom you know, financial constraints in the delivery of services of almost all mandated service delivery of the government due to lack or poor financial management or poor tax collections, massive corruption practices by those elective and appointed officials in the procurement system and even by the rank and file in terms of the practice of their responsibilities, uneven and unequal distribution of programs and projects to gravely poverty stricken communities, no system of monitoring and evaluations of all program and projects and more importantly there apparently is no transparency and accountability by those in the cudgels of power and supposed responsibilities and obligations.

RATIONALE:
In the light of these plights faced by many communities, their determination to overcome their suffering is greatly affected. Because of the lack of capacity which would be a way to empower them, they tend to be complacent and inactive in a much needed economic endeavor.

For years now, various forms of interventions were already devised to arrest these negative occurrences in order to alleviate if not to ease the pressures of poverty of the people. And this initiative does not to go against, but furthers and polishes the existing institutional and organizational development initiatives.

For as long as there is a strong foundation and strengthened organization and capacitated individuals competently manning different posts within the community organization, any intervention will surely suffice to be effective and successful and an avenue for growth through sustained and guided intervention shall take place.

In view of the foregoing, “BET FOR HUMAN” is poised to strengthen, unify and consolidate most of the needed know-how, knowledge and breakthroughs to solve a particular need/problem of sectors identified in a given community. Thus, opening possibilities for people to realize and be empowered and be determined to address any social, economic, environmental and even political constraints posed by unequal opportunities.

The concept did not come like in a twinkling of an eye. But, rather through the many observed and experienced scenarios and situations the members of the board of trustees and some other resourceful people from our well established networks and resource pool, who felt the very need of interventions through trainings, workshops, seminars, skills development and even material or financial assistance to the people on the ground.

The capacity of these communities tends to be crude and unmatched and unequal to their faced obstacles. For it was observed that leaders of the community or organizations are seen pampered to be accommodated in various hotels to attend seminars or training, fora or conferences in the guise of capacity buildings at the expense of the organization’s and people’s finances and the very much needed monetary resources intended for development, thus limiting the delivery of most basic services direly needed by the community(s).
Therefore, we impose it upon ourselves with the aid of other partners both national and international to be directly involved in the affairs of specific identified sector or sectors and not just their leaders but most importantly the grassroots to include the underprivileged and unfortunate women, children and the elderly. By providing them the necessary knowledge, skills and opportunity to thrive politically, economically, environmentally and more so socially, whereby much needed organizations and enterprise will be set, re establish/ re organized and revitalized through proper education trainings and monitoring, thereby assisting and guiding them in every step of the way they take. In so doing, they will be able to stand on their own and elicit from among them the much needed change which will make them vibrant to propel them for development to the future and beyond.

Vision

AS AN ORGANIZATION WORKING FOR THE INTEREST AND WELFARE OF THE UNDERPRIVILEGED, WE ENVISION A SOCIETY WHERE THE LESS FORTUNATE AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS SHALL HAVE BEEN CAPACITATED AND EQUIPPED WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES (MENTAL, INFRASTRUCTURE) AND EMPOWERED TO HARNESS THEIR FULLEST POTENTIALS TO DEVELOP THEIR LIVES AND THUS ENABLE THEM TO ENJOY THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABOR THROUGH THE PRESENCE OF SOCIO-POLITICAL, ETHNO-CULTURAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PURSUITS BY WAY OF UNITY, EQUALITY, SOLIDARITY, PEACE AND DEMOCRACY MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

MISSION

SHALL ACTIVELY PURSUE A POLICY OF INVOLVING THE INTEREST OF THE UNDERPREVILEDGE AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS, THROUGH TRAININGS AND CAPACITY BUILDING, LIVELIHOOD AND ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT USING THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE, AND MOVE TO CREATE AN ONWARD AND SUSTAINED DEVELOPMENT WITH UNDERSTANDING AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES WHERE FAIRNESS, UNDERSTANDING AND CONTINUED SUCCESS IS WELL WITHIN REACH.
MAIN GOAL

OUR GOAL IS TO BUILD A BETTER AND SAFER WORLD, WHERE ALL CHILDREN RECEIVE A GOOD EDUCATION AND ARE ABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR TALENTS TO THE FULLEST, SO THAT NOW AND LATER AS ADULTS THEY CAN HELP EACH OTHER IN THE SPIRIT OF SOLIDARITY, TRUST AND MUTUAL RESPECT.

Goals:

1 To organize and reorganize various NGO’s and PO’s and civil society groups in the community into a vibrant, active and dynamic functional organization.

2 To equip these organizations with skills and capabilities, appropriate values and technological know- how towards the realization of their socio political, ethno cultural and economic as well as environmental development.

3 Pursue alternative farming techniques in on and off farm endeavor and employ technology to boost agricultural production at the same time increase the income of every household and ultimately of the entire community.

4 Push existing institutions and entities to support and provide communities with alternative and sustained efforts to solve their specific sectoral issues and concerns.

5 Enhance the capacities and skills of the constituencies through continued skills training to increase productivity and stable livelihood.

6 Issues and concern of women, children and the elderly of which their health is of primordial consideration pursuant to any development undertakings.

7 Create a community based farm (agricultural) technicians who will aid themselves in solving farm problems.

8 A model farm shall be established which will serve as a model and a seed bank and at the same time a livelihood economic enterprise.

9 Shall promote just and humane and environment friendly programs, projects and activities and further the cause of the environment preservation.

CURRENT UNDERTAKINGS:

The members of the board of trustees and the many resource persons or technical consultants for BET FOR HUMAN, in their own personal capacities are engaged in various programs lead and sponsored by national as well as international funding organizations, conducting trainings, seminars in many places in the Philippines. Their expertise ranges from issues and advocacies about the flight of disadvantaged, specially that of women, children and the elderly and creating a better world in the spirit of brotherhood, economic subservience, solidarity, unity, mutual understanding, cultural exchanges, transparency and accountability in the field of governance.

Others are conducting strategic development planning and budgeting with many local government organizations as well as private and people’s organization and cooperatives. Others are engrossed with the issues of agro- aqua culture explorations and enhancements and coastal resource management assessments.

Some concerns themselves with the issues and concerns of the ancestral domain of the indigenous people and the environment.

Others are coming from the academe, NGO’s and Government Institutions.

Most importantly quite a few are engaged in translating the message for a better world to different dialects in the world; and outsourcing funds to finance the many development initiatives of the organization conducive to and in relation with sustainable economic development; such as:

Thrust(s):

8. Pursue and accomplish such other concerns that shall be specifically required and accomplished by any donor/funding agencies pursuant to its particular interests and thrusts.

BETTER WORLD FOR HUMANITY...

My brother Nixon a political science graduate, my younger sister Leslie a psychology graduate and myself a true blooded volunteer worker for almost half of my life. Just formed an non-profit organization called BETTER WORLD for HUMANITY. This is to make us one with all our volunteering works and register it for legal purposes..

With our passion to serve humanity we come up with this brilliant idea that helping underprivileged people like us, will have a better world for the future of our children's children and the best is yet to come...

This is thus aimed so that the people, the end qualified beneficiaries can be provided with sound, effective and efficient programs and projects and activities to bring the people from a state or underprivileged to a platform of sustainable growth and development.

Despite the fact that it is not that known, the Local leadership and most of the communities all around Mindanao has seen the organization as a Glitter of hope amidst the darkness and gloominess that engulfs them. Thus, they have expressed their support and commitment and even financial resources to sustain the organization even in its early stage.

Nonetheless, Local Municipal and Barangay Leaders have requested for a localized socio-economic interventions, using the many technologies available to develop and enhance the capacities of the local populace. Therefore, the organization is poised to conduct a seminar/training/workshops in that respect for the communities in Zamboanga peninsula and even beyond or in such other areas within the span of if its influence and operation.
